Admission Requirements
Admission requirements
include completion of all professional doctoral degree requirements from a
regionally accredited institution of higher education or an American
Psychological Association (APA) -accredited program and a predoctoral
internship meeting Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship
Centers (APPIC) standards. This requirement is defined as "having on the
first day of the fellowship either the diploma in hand or a letter from the
director of graduate studies verifying the completion of all degree
requirements pending institution graduation ceremony."
Fellowship Program
The Fellowship is 1-year with
the option of a 2nd year pending agreement between the Fellow and
the Fellowship Director. The decision to stay on for a 2nd year
should be made no later than 7 months into the 1st year.
The Fellow will get
training and supervised experience in the following areas:
1) Clinical Outcomes Research
2) Psychiatric Hospital
Administration
3) Outpatient Psychotherapy,
Behavioral Medicine and Assessment
4) Inpatient Psychotherapy,
Behavioral Medicine and Assessment
5) Medical Student Teaching
6) Psychology Intern
Supervision
One of the primary
responsibilities of the Fellow will be to research, develop, monitor and
implement clinical outcomes measures for all outpatient and inpatient
psychiatric clinical programs offered through the Institute of Psychiatry at
MUSC. Additionally, the Fellow will be responsible for managing and analyzing
the outcome data as well as preparing reports to be presented to the Executive
Quality Council of the Institute. The Fellow will Co-Chair the Research and
Outcomes Council in the Institute and will consult with the leadership of
different psychiatric programs and units within the Institute about clinical
outcome tracking, research design and data analysis. The Fellow will be
encouraged to initiate clinical studies within the Institute and submit
findings for publication (as well as participate in grant proposal development
for clinical, program-development and psychiatric patient-safety initiatives).
The Fellow will conduct
outpatient psychotherapy at the Counseling and Psychological Services clinic
which offers outpatient psychological and psychiatric services to graduate and
medical students of MUSC.
The Fellow will have the
opportunity to provide brief psychotherapy and assessment services to
psychiatric inpatients and will work with multi-disciplinary treatment teams
which include physicians, psychology interns, social-workers, pharmacists,
residents, medical students, physician-assistant and occupational therapy
students.
The Fellow will have the
opportunity to teach 1st-year medical students in the Doctoring I
curriculum which is a course designed to orient medical students to the medical
interview, teach interviewing and clinical observational skills, and help them
begin to apply critical thinking skills in the practice of evidence-based
medicine.
The Fellow will have an
opportunity to train and supervise Clinical Psychology Interns in the
Behavioral Medicine Rotation at MUSC. Thus, the Fellow will get training and
experience in psychological approaches to pain management, smoking cessation,
weight-management, hypertension management, and behavioral medicine in
inpatient settings.
Didactics and Supervision
The Fellow will be required
to attend all Grand Rounds offered through the Department of Psychiatry at MUSC
and weekly group-supervision and didactic sessions at CAPS. The Fellow will
also have 1-2 hours of one-on-one, face-to-face supervision with the Fellowship
Director.
Clinical and Research
Competency Evaluations
Documentation of clinical and
research competency is necessary for the successful completion of the
fellowship. The fellow presents a diagnostic evaluation, including original
data, and a written case formulation prepared on a patient seen during the past
12 months. These materials are reviewed by a faculty committee and discussed
with the fellow. The fellow is required to demonstrate an advanced and
sophisticated understanding of diagnosis, assessment, and psychotherapy as well
as an ability to critically and sensitively use information derived from the
empirical literature to guide the development of the treatment plan and
selection of clinical interventions.
Research competency is
demonstrated at the conclusion of the fellowship year by the submission of an
empirical or theoretical article to a refereed journal by the conclusion of the
fellowship year.

Salary and Benefits
The salary for the
postdoctoral fellowship year is $35,200 plus benefits, including two weeks of
professional leave and two weeks of vacation.
